ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

PSAT

Sunset is pleased to offer the PSAT/NMSQT again this year.  Here are the details for the upcoming test:

 
  • Test date is Saturday, October 15th

  • Location: Stoller Middle School

  • Test begins at 8:00 am (doors open at 7:30 am)

  • 10th and 11th grade students can register for the test

  • Cost is $40

 

Registration will be from September 12th – October 7th at the business office, or you can pay the PSAT fee online through ParentVue using the following steps.

  1. Log in to the system or follow instructions to set up an account

  2. Choose the student 

  3. Click on School Items

  4. Click on Exam Payments

  5. Click on PSAT Exams

  6. Follow instructions for payment

All students can access the PSAT 2022 Student Guide online here. If the student would prefer a paper copy of the student guide, those can be picked up in the main office with verification of payment at the business office.  

 

An important note about testing day:

The test itself takes 2 hours and 45 min.  With breaks and transitions factored in, most students are done by 1pm.  Students do not have access to their phones during testing time.  Students will exit the building when their test has been completed and collected.

Program 7-9pm

Seen on the Walls

Art and Activism Showcase March 11 from 5-7 in A-hall commons.  Presented by SASO

Club of the Month:  Everybody Athletics.  Josh Miller and Maddy Murphy are the presidents of this club that promotes a workout program for developmentally disabled adults. 

JSA/Junior States of America:  debate/discussion/activism.  Meets Tuesdays in room E-5. 2:45-3:30

Book Drive/Book Swap:  March 4-16.  “If you can read em, we’ll take em”.

Are you interested in getting involved-having a say-being a leader?  Join Intro to Leadership, Student Leadership, Student Government.  Informational meeting March 31, 1:30pm in M-1.

Spring Sports are up and running.  Practices are under way in preparation for upcoming competitions.  Watch this spot for weekly schedules of games and matches.

3/19   “DON’T FREAK OUT” Light the Fight podcast hosts “Don’t Freak Out” Parenting Night.  Join us to learn strategies to partner with your children, help them combat anxiety and depression and build high quality relationships for life. Come learn the secret to staying calm and how to best help when those you care about need your support.  Presented by speaker, David Kozlowski, Child and Family Therapist and TED Talk presenter and Heidi Swapp, mom and entrepreneur from the “Light The Fight” podcast.

 This event is free, but you will need a ticket to attend.  Sunset families may pick up tickets in the main office.  Doors open at 6pm and our speaker will begin at 7pm.  Don’t miss this life changing opportunity for your family. Parents are encouraged to join us.

2/12   We Love Poetry Open Mic.  1:30-2:30 in the library. This non-competitive and fun open mic reading is open to all students and staff members.  We encourage you to come and watch—and read your favorite poem, practice your poem for Poetry Out Loud Competition, or even share your own original poetry.

1/16                Walking tour for new and prospective students and families.  Administrator led tour of the school. 4:00pm.  No reservation needed, just show up.

Finals week January 21-24: finish work, get academic help, study for finals.

Every AT: peer tutors ready to help all students.  In the fishbowl

You are invited to attend our January Teen Topic Conversations:

The Teenage Brain and Decision Making.

Join us for coffee and this unique opportunity as the Sunset Counseling Staff hosts Dr. Lindsay Lillstrom, a licensed psychologist who specializes in therapeutic and assessment services for children and their families.

Dr. Lillstrom is the owner of Wavelengths NW, a private practice dedicated to supporting young people as they navigate challenges associated with relationships, neurodevelopmental differences, and emotional distress. She also conducts psychological assessments through Mindsights in Portland, Oregon.

 Dr. Lillstrom’s clinical experiences include working with children and families impacted by anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, and trauma. She strives to support families through a process of individual and relational exploration in the hopes of developing a tailored and concrete plan for how to foster positive and lasting change.

Our session will be Tuesday, January 14, 2020, from 7:30 am - 8:30 am

 in the Community Room.

We hope you will take this opportunity to attend and connect with other parents.

CONGRATS to the Men and Women Cross Country teams on their outstanding performance this past weekend at the OSAA State Championships.

The Men finished 3rd in STATE…congrats to:

Vedanth Iyer

Vedanth is a junior at Sunset High School where he is the President of the Science Fair Club and the Founder of the Breakthrough Junior Challenge Club. He is passionate about science research. Vedanth wanted to find a cost effective solution for improving rechargeable lithium ion batteries and has discovered high energy and efficient battery materials using Computational Quantum Mechanics. He has been recognized nationally for his research and is currently working with Caltech and OSU. He will be speaking about turning rejection into success through his experience as a young scientist and how science has revolutionized the society we live in today. 

 

Aarna Dixit

Aarna is a junior at Sunset High School where she is involved with student leadership and many clubs-four of which she holds a leadership position in. Out of these clubs, the one she is most passionate about is Students Against Sexual Oppression, a small part of the non-profit organization she founded sophomore year. Besides activism, public speaking is a passion of hers. Outside of school, she is on the Planned Parenthood Teen Council and a crisis volunteer for the OR Youthline. She will be speaking about her advocacy around sexual violence as an ally, and the issue itself.
