Principal's Message

Welcome to Sunset High School,

Home of the Apollos, Sunset High School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School.  Sunset is one of the premiere college preparatory high schools in the greater Portland area proudly serving 2,000 students and over 22,000 alumni.  With award winning programs in Academics, Athletics, Fine and Performing Arts, Service, and Specially Designed Instruction, Sunset provides the fullness of a comprehensive high school experience while still maintaining a highly supportive community that understands the power and importance of relationships.  

Our focus at Sunset is on a trait that has been shown to be the number one factor in the success of all students.  With synonyms like perseverance, hard work, and persistence, we are simply calling it “grit”.  There is a strong body of research that has shown that grit trumps, intelligence, socioeconomic status, and even aptitude when it comes to success.  In addition, grit is not a fixed quality.  Throughout this year teachers are going to be working very intentionally with our students to improve their grittiness!  For a more detailed look at the link between grit and success please view this TED Talk video:
